Sun Prairie Apartments
The Original Tree Huggers

Welcome to your new home at Sun Prairie, the greenest apartment community in West Des Moines!

We are eager to share some of the ways that Sun Prairie is environmentally responsible, as well as ways that you can become part of the green movement!

So what does it mean to go green? There is a growing movement of environmentally conscious and well-informed consumers who are thinking about their finances, managing their money, and making choices for their future in a new way. Consumers are making choices based on whether products and services are earth-friendly, ethically produced, recyclable and/or energy-efficient.

The green movement is saturating the market, and there are plenty of opportunities to jump on the bandwagon. What you might not know is that conserving resources has always been on the forefront of Sun Prairie’s operation. Here are a few ways that Sun Prairie has created a win-win situation for our owners, our residents, and our environment for over 20 years!

  1. Each apartment comes equipped with window quilts on the sliding patio door and on the bedroom window(s). These insulated fabric window coverings seal on all sides to reduce solar build-up during the summer and conserve heat making you feel more comfortable during the winter!
  2. Wood-clad casement windows featuring thermal panes that further block cold air from infiltrating your apartment.
  3. Your apartment at Sun Prairie comes equipped with compact fluorescent energy-saving light bulbs. You'll see savings of $5-7 per month, and we'll replace them when they burn out!*
  4. Ceiling fans are conveniently located in each bedroom and in most dining areas to help circulate air flow, leading to reduced air conditioning costs.
  5. The average showerhead uses three to five gallons of water per minute, but Sun Prairie features water-conserving showerheads, which use just one gallon of water per minute!
  6. Our irrigation system uses recycled rainwater that is collected and pumped from one of three scenic ponds.
  7. Our community used to be nothing more than farmland. Each of the 10,000 trees and shrubs on the property were planted with the intent of creating a "green space".The combination of our landscaping and aforementioned ponds help to support local wildlife!
  8. Recycling is the easiest thing you can do to go green! Sun Prairie provides recycling bins near the 6549 building, which is located just west of 60th Street.
